This past weekend, I hosted a game during my birthday party, called:
“Kill the Algorithm”
This game involved everyone bringing something to share with the group as a recommendation. This could have been a piece of media, a restaurant tip, or an idea. But anything at all was appropriate to bring.
The reason for this party idea is two-fold.
First, since the “Tik Tok Ban” on January 19th, the Algorithm hasn’t been the same. With users observing far fewer individual content creators, and far more corporate owned Tik Tok channels coming through their feeds.
There’s a theory that the less than 24-hour North American ban was to cover a complete change of the algorithm; restricting what kinds of things can go viral on the app. Whether or not this is true, people have started to lament that Tik Tok feels less personalized than it previously did.
The other reason for this game is that social media, in general, lets you see what you want to see. Or, it only lets you see what it thinks you want to see. And a silo of content is very easy to slip into, leaving avenues of exploration totally unseen and unknown to you.
So how do you combat this?
You get a bunch of living, breathing human beings into a room and let them share the things they are passionate about.
The game was a huge success and people really rose to the challenge.
The list of curated things was so diverse, I had to share it here.
The list below is what was shared: it’s a curation by people, for people.
There’s links for each to explore.
Enjoy— kill the algorithm.
